As most of you know, the Golden Age Batman has always been my favorite, so I simply could not pass up the opportunity to discuss the character, his origins and many other aspects of his Golden Age incarnation. I had a lot of fun on the show and look forward to the next time they want to delve into the Golden Age of comic books! You'll be able to play this episode of the ESO podcast by selecting the play button below. Thanks again to the guys at the Earth Station One Podcast for having me on the show.

<itunes:summary>Merry Christmas from the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast and welcome to our fifth annual Christmas episode! For Christmas 2009, we tell the story of "Captain Marvel and the Plot Against Christmas" from Captain Marvel Adventures #42 (January 1945).

In this story, Captain Marvel foils the plot of Gouge Smith to deprive the orphans of the Creedmore Orphanage of toys for Christmas. This story is told in the tradition of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". I hope you enjoy learning about a classic Captain Marvel Christmas story from the Golden Age of Comic Books.

During the show I also request assistance from the fans of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast and Blog. DC Comics is currently in the process of deciding whether to renew the license of Asgard Press to print the Vintage DC Comics Calendar (http://goldenagecomics.org/wordpress/2009/08/20/2010-vintage-dc-comics-marvel-comics-calendars/). As you know, this is a great product and I have been honored to be a part of it. It would be very helpful (and a great Christmas present) if all of the fans of the Golden Age of Comic Books would go to Amazon.com and leave a nice review of the calendar. We need all of the help we can get! If you have time, and you enjoy this calendar and want to see more in the future, please use this link (http://www.amazon.com/Comics-Super-Heroes-Vintage-Calendar/dp/1603683224/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261359731&sr=8-1) to leave us a good review.

I hope everyone has a great Holiday Season and a very Merry Christmas!</itunes:summary>

I'm back from a great weekend at the 2009 Baltimore Comic Con (http://www.comicon.com/baltimore/) where I was privileged to be a guest of Asgard Press (http://asgardpress.com/?promocode=GOLDENAGECOMICS). We had a great crowd and I was very pleased with the interest in the Asgard products, including the DC and Marvel Vintage Comic Book Calendars (http://goldenagecomics.org/wordpress/2009/08/20/2010-vintage-dc-comics-marvel-comics-calendars/). I signed a number of the DC Calendars, and enjoyed talking to many fans of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast.

While at the show I was able to find the time to conduct some interviews and put together a Special Edition Baltimore Comic Con Podcast.

I conducted an interview of Peter Shin of Asgard Press, where we talk about the Vintage Calendars and other great products offered by Asgard. You really need to check out the great products at their website (http://asgardpress.com/?promocode=GOLDENAGECOMICS).

One of the great things about Baltimore for Golden Age fans is Geppi's Entertainment Museum (http://www.geppismuseum.com). Museum Curator, Dr. Arnold Blumberg (http://www.apanelwithnoborders.com/) was at the show and I was pleased to be able to interview him about the Museum. Not only does the Museum exhibit some rare Golden Age comics and memorabilia, it offers great programs for young and old. Arnold mentions of number of these programs in the interview.

I was fortunate to have a few minutes to talk to the great Don Rosa, who makes his third appearance on the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast. We talk about everything from The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, to Golden Age Fandom, to a discussion of Don's two favorite Barks' adventures. Don is always a gentleman and loves to talk about comics more than I do!

Last but not least, this episode contains the second annual trivia contest! The first listener to email me the correct answer to the two questions (and all subparts) will receive an autographed copy of the 2010 Vintage DC Comics Calendar and a copy of the 2010 Vintage Marvel Comics Calendar. There will only be one winner so make sure you quickly do your research and email your answer! The email address for your entry is goldenagecomics@gmail.com. I'll reveal the name of the winner and the answers in a later post.

Thanks again to Peter and Mi-Sun of Asgard Press for making this a truly great weekend at the Baltimore Comic Con. I am already counting the days to next year!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I'm back with another installment of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast. In this installment, we discuss the Golden Age Crimebuster who appeared in Boy Comics.

Crimebuster was the alter ego of teenager Chuck Chandler. After his parents were murdered by the evil Nazi villain, Iron Jaw, Chuck became Crimebuster and vowed to avenge their deaths and to fight Nazi evil, with his monkey sidekick, Squeeks. Boy Comics was published by Lev Gleason Publications and debuted with issue #3 in April 1942. The series ran until issue #119 in March 1956. Chuck Chandler appeared in every issue of the title. His last Golden Age appearance was in issue #119, March 1956. This title has some classic WWII propaganda covers.

In addition to Crimebuster, I mention the new Marvel Mystery Comics Handbook: 70th Anniversary Special (http://marvel.com/catalog/?id=12761) published by Marvel this week. In the tradition of the History of the Marvel Universe series, this issue focuses on all of the characters appearing in the first year of the existence of Marvel Comics.

Last but not least, I mention my upcoming trip to the Baltimore Comic Con (http://www.comicon.com/baltimore/) (October 10 and 11). I will be the guest of Asgard Press (http://asgardpress.com/?promocode=GOLDENAGECOMICS) at their booth from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Come by and see me if you are at the show. I'll be signing calendars (http://goldenagecomics.org/wordpress/2009/08/20/2010-vintage-dc-comics-marvel-comics-calendars/) and talking about Golden Age comic books.</itunes:summary>

This character got his start in pulp magazines in the early 1940's and made his first comic book appearance in the pages of Prize Comics #7 (September 1940). He appeared in this title for 24 issues and eventually got his own book, and a new look, in Green Lama Comics #1 (March 1944). This title ran for eight issues, until 1946.

The Green Lama was drawn by the great Mac Raboy whose most notable work was on Captain Marvel Junior for Fawcett.

Here are a few cover images from Green Lama's Golden Age comic book run.

<itunes:summary>Another great day and a very large crowd at Heroes Con (http://www.heroesonline.com/heroescon.html) in Charlotte. There were long lines for the guests and the dealers all seemed to be selling a lot of books. I especially enjoyed spending a good part of the day talking to Chuck Rozanski of Mile High Comics (http://milehighcomics.com/). He has a lot of great stories to tell from his many years as a comic book dealer and fan.

The highlight of the day was my participation on the Podcasters Panel. Joining me on the panel were Chuck Moore of Comic Related (http://www.comicrelated.com), Jimmy Aquino of Comic News Insider (http://jimmyaquino.typepad.com/comicnewsinsider/), Bryan Deemer of Comic Geek Speak (http://www.comicgeekspeak.com) and Phil Jackson of Indie Spinner Rack (http://indiespinnerrack.blogspot.com/). We had a great time talking about our shows and answering the questions of those in attendance. Our moderator, Jonathan Hickman (http://pronea.com/wp/) did a great job. It's fair to say that there is great camaraderie and respect among the members of the comic book podcasting community. Special thanks to all of our fans who attended this panel. I'm already looking forward to next year's show!

UPDATE: June 22, 2009 - Special Thanks to Chuck Moore at Comic Related for recording the entire panel. It is included at the bottom of this post for listening and downloading. It is also included in CR's "Related Recap" episode #125 (http://comicrelated.com/news/1908/the-related-recap-125-podcast).

One more day to go for Heroes Con 2009. The show's been great so far, and I'm sure the last day will also be great.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast is back with a celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Marvel Comics!

Marvel Comics (known as Timely Comics then) got its start with the publication of Marvel Comics #1 (October-November 1939) and quickly changed its name to Marvel Mystery Comics with issue #2. This title introduced two of Marvel's most popular Golden Age heroes, The Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner. Marvel went on the publish these characters in their own magazines, Human Torch Comics and Submariner Comics.

One of Marvel's greatest heroes, Captain America (by Simon and Kirby) got his start in Captain America Comics (March 1941), and was of their most popular Golden Age magazines. Marvel also published such titles as All-Winners Comics, Young Allies Comics, Daring Mystery Comics, USA Comics and others.

As the superheroes lost popularity after World War II, Marvel ceased publications of these titles in 1949 and 1950 (except for a brief revival in 1954), and the world did not see their superheroes again until the 1960's. During the interim, Marvel (under the Atlas name) published a number of horror and "weird" themed comic books.

<itunes:summary>This is our fourth annual Christmas episode of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast. Merry Christmas! I've covered a variety of topics on our past Christmas shows, but I thought I would discuss a Christmas story that introduced a major Golden Age character to the world, Uncle Scrooge McDuck. Uncle Scrooge was created by the great Carl Barks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Barks) in his classic, "A Christmas on Bear Mountain" in Four Color Comics #178 (December 1947). Uncle Scrooge was modeled after Dickens' Ebeneezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843. Uncle Scrooge's early personality was very similar to Ebeneezer's. Although Barks originally intended Uncle Scrooge to be a throw away character, he became extremely popular and eventually got his own title that is still published today by Gemstone under license from Disney. I also mention Don Rosa's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Rosa) excellent "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" series, that added a lot of meat to the bones originally crafted by Barks. In Chapter Twelve of "Life and Times", Rosa gives us a sequel to "A Christmas on Bear Mountain".

I also noticed that Chris Marshall at the Collected Comics Library Podcast (http://www.collectedcomicslibrary.com) is about to publish episode #200 (http://www.collectedcomicslibrary.com/2008/12/17/ccl-podcast-200-frank-millers-daredevil-omnibus-1-and-2/), so I spend a few minutes congratulating him on a job well done in reaching this milestone.

Last but not least, for Christmas I have another trivia contest. The winner will receive a DC Vintage Super Heroes Calendar for 2009 (http://goldenagecomics.org/wordpress/2008/10/15/vintage-dc-comics-super-hero-calendar-for-2009/). Good luck!

Enjoy the show!

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the 59th episode of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast! In this episode we discuss Phantom Lady, who was published by several comic book companies during the Golden Age. She first appeared in Quality's Police Comics #1 (August, 1941) and ran until issue #23 in 1943. Four years later, she was published by Fox Features Syndicate in her own title, Phantom Lady starting with issue #13 and ending with issue number 23. Her run in Phantom Lady was highlighted with art by great "good girl" artisit, Matt Baker (http://goldenagecomics.org/wordpress/2009/06/17/comics-then-5-comics-first-great-african-american-artist/). Baker was probably the first African American comic book artist. After another 5 year hiatus, she was picked up by Ajax and had a four issue run of Phantom Lady. The cover to Phantom Lady #17, shown here, is famous for being discussed by Fredric Wertham in his attack on comics in Seduction of The Innocent (1954).

<itunes:summary>Happy Halloween from the Golden Age of Comic Books! I have not had time recently to record a new show, but in the fine tradition of reruns ("reprints" for you comics fans), I thought I would post the links for two of my previous episodes with "scary" Halloween themes.

Going way back to Episode 7 of the Golden Age of Comic Books (July 16, 2005), I devoted the show to the EC Horror Comics from the 1950's. If you want to read the best horror comics from the Golden Age, EC is the only place to go. EC published Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror and The Haunt of Fear. EC had the best writers and artisits of the day working in their bullpen, and if you can stand the gore, you'll love these vintage horror comics. Fortunately, these comics have been reprinted many times, and are currently being reprinted in some very nice, full color hardback books.

Golden Age of Comic Books #7 (July 16, 2005)

In 2006, I recorded one of my favorite episodes of the Golden Age of Comic Books (episode 46, October 29, 2006) featuring none other than the classic Frankenstein monster, with writing and art by the great Dick Briefer. Breifer's incarnation of Mary Shelly's 1818 literary work (Shelly wrote the original novel at age 18) first appeared in Prize Comics #7 in 1940. The monster started out as a very scary and destructive character, later becoming part of a humor themed strip. He got his own title in 1945, and in the early 1950's became the rampaging monster of destruction all over again. His title ran until 1954.

Golden Age of Comic Books #46 (October 29, 2006)

I hope you enjoy these Halloween themed past episdoes of the Golden Age of Comic Books!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I'm back with the 58th installment of the Golden Age of Comic Books! In this episode we discuss the Golden Age Superman-Batman Team-ups, brought to you by DC Comics. Although Superman and Batman first appeared on the cover of New York World's Fair Comics (1940), they did not have a full team up and learn each other's secret identity until 1952 when they appeared in Superman #76. They went on to have regular team-up stories starting in 1954 in the pages of World's Finest Comics #71. There have been several origins of the team-up of Superman and Batman; most notably in Superman #76, World's Finest #94 (1958) and Adventure Comics #275 (1960). The team-up of these characters has continued to the Modern Age of Comics, and they remain as popular as ever!

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast, we discuss the Golden Age Black Hood from MLJ Comics. Although MLJ is most famous for Archie Andrews, it had several very popular superheroes in the Golden Age. The Black Hood was one of MLJ's most popular superheroes, and made his first appearance in Top Notch Comics #9 (June, 1940). He went on the star in Jack Pot Comics, Pep Comics and his own title, Black Hood Comics. His last Golden Age appearance was in Pep Comics #59 (December, 1946). In his last few appearances in the Golden Age of Comic Books, his secret identity had been revelead to the world, and he was a non-costumed private detective.
