<itunes:summary>Merry Christmas from the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast and welcome to our fifth annual Christmas episode! For Christmas 2009, we tell the story of "Captain Marvel and the Plot Against Christmas" from Captain Marvel Adventures #42 (January 1945).

In this story, Captain Marvel foils the plot of Gouge Smith to deprive the orphans of the Creedmore Orphanage of toys for Christmas. This story is told in the tradition of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". I hope you enjoy learning about a classic Captain Marvel Christmas story from the Golden Age of Comic Books.

During the show I also request assistance from the fans of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast and Blog. DC Comics is currently in the process of deciding whether to renew the license of Asgard Press to print the Vintage DC Comics Calendar (http://goldenagecomics.org/wordpress/2009/08/20/2010-vintage-dc-comics-marvel-comics-calendars/). As you know, this is a great product and I have been honored to be a part of it. It would be very helpful (and a great Christmas present) if all of the fans of the Golden Age of Comic Books would go to Amazon.com and leave a nice review of the calendar. We need all of the help we can get! If you have time, and you enjoy this calendar and want to see more in the future, please use this link (http://www.amazon.com/Comics-Super-Heroes-Vintage-Calendar/dp/1603683224/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261359731&sr=8-1) to leave us a good review.

I hope everyone has a great Holiday Season and a very Merry Christmas!</itunes:summary>

It seems that I have been focused on Golden Age reprints, lately. Of course, with the cost of Golden Age comics being sky high, reprints are about the only way to enjoy the comics of old. While a lot of the “key” material has been reprinted many times, there’s still a bunch of Golden Age [...]

<itunes:summary>In this episode we talk about the one and only Captain Marvel! The "Big Red Cheese" made his first appearance in Whiz Comics #2 (#1) in February, 1940. He had first appeared in ashcan copies of Flash Comics and Thrill Comics as Captain Thunder. Due to copyright issues, Fawcett changed the character's name to Captain Marvel. In addition to Whiz Comics, he also appeared in Captain Marvel Comics, The Marvel Family and other titles published by Fawcett. After a long legal battle with DC Comics over alleged copyright infringement by Fawcett (DC alleged Captain Marvel was simply of knock off of Superman), Fawcett ceased their comic book operations and later sold all of its characters to DC. DC began publishing Captain Marvel in the 1970's. Today, Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful superheroes in the DC Universe.
