{"id":1047,"date":"2009-08-08T12:00:09","date_gmt":"2009-08-08T17:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/?p=1047"},"modified":"2009-08-08T12:05:50","modified_gmt":"2009-08-08T17:05:50","slug":"a-golden-age-love-triangle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/08\/08\/a-golden-age-love-triangle\/","title":{"rendered":"A Golden Age Love Triangle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As most fans of comics know, one of the classic love triangles from the Golden Age of Comic Books is between Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. \u00a0There\u00a0has been much hoopla in the press recently about Archie&#8217;s decision to marry Veronica. \u00a0Poor Betty! \u00a0Archie and Betty first appeared in the pages of <em>Pep Comics <\/em>#22 (December 1941), and Veronica four issues later in <em>Pep Comics<\/em> #26 (April 1942). \u00a0Veronica&#8217;s &#8220;origin&#8221; was later modified in the pages of <em>Archie Comics<\/em> #1 (Winter 1942). \u00a0But, when did the eternal love triangle between Archie, Betty and Veronica first appear?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1059\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1059\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1059\" title=\"Archie #1\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_1-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"Archie #1\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_1-219x300.jpg 219w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_1-109x150.jpg 109w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archie #1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It all began in the now classic story, &#8220;Double Date&#8221; in <em>Archie Comics<\/em> #7 (March-April 1944). \u00a0This story has all of the typical elements of a 1940&#8217;s Archie yarn, where through some set of circumstances Archie manages to put himself in an impossible situation that he makes worse (sometimes better) as the action progresses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1060\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1060\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1060\" title=\"Archie #7\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_7-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"Archie #7\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_7-207x300.jpg 207w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_7-103x150.jpg 103w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/archie_7.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archie #7<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the story begins, Archie and Betty head to Tate&#8217;s Soda Shop and are surprised to learn that as the 10,000th customer they win tickets to &#8220;The Fall of Niagra&#8221; at the Lyric Theatre. \u00a0Archie asks Betty to go with him, but she declines and suggests he take Judghead. \u00a0Of course, Archie has no intention of Asking his old friend Jug, and calls Veronica to accompany him. \u00a0Veronica gladly accepts, breaking her date with Reggie Mantle (Archie&#8217;s chief rival for Veronica&#8217;s affection over the years). \u00a0The game is on!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1054\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1054\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1054\" title=\"&quot;Double Date&quot; Second Splash Page<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For poor Archie, things never go as planned, and as he prepares to leave his house to pick-up Veronica, Betty appears, ready to go. \u00a0It seems she changed her mind! \u00a0When Archie stammers, &#8220;But what about er&#8230;a&#8230;Judghead?&#8221;, Betty explains that she saw him and that he would be staying at home with his father. \u00a0As Archie nervously tries to think his way out of his dilemma, Betty shouts, &#8220;<strong>You wouldn&#8217;t think of taking some OTHER GIRL, would you?<\/strong>&#8221; \u00a0Archie&#8217;s response? \u00a0&#8220;Who? \u00a0Me? <strong>GULP<\/strong>!&#8221; \u00a0That pretty much seals the deal for the rest of Archie&#8217;s wild night to come.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1056\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1056\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1056\" title=\"Archie's Dilemma\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_3-300x145.jpg\" alt=\"Archie's Dilemma\" width=\"300\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_3-300x145.jpg 300w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_3-150x72.jpg 150w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_3-1024x498.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_3.jpg 1770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archie&#39;s Dilemma<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The madness begins with Archie telling Betty to wait a moment, as he runs out the room to place a call to the theatre to see if he can get two more tickets to the show. \u00a0Sure enough, tickets are available, but Archie does not have enough money and actually borrows the money from Betty (without telling her why, of course)! \u00a0Archie asks Betty to wait, rushes to the theatre, buys the tickets, rushes back to&#8230;Veronica! \u00a0He drops Veronica off at their seats on the main floor of the theatre and tells her to wait there while he goes in search of medicine for his sudden headache (I&#8217;m sure by this point he had a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">real<\/span> headache!). \u00a0 \u00a0Archie then leaves the theatre, drives like a madman to get Betty, and races back to the theatre. \u00a0Upon arrival, Archie finds out, too his momentary relief, that his seats with Betty are at the top of the theatre in the balcony, far above his seats with Veronica. \u00a0Archie then begins the frantic exercise of racing back up and down the stairs to share his time between the two girls, at one point exclaiming, &#8220;I&#8217;m beginning to feel like a mountain goat!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1057\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1057\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1057\" title=\"Archie's Scheme is Discovered\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_4-300x283.jpg\" alt=\"Archie's Scheme is Discovered\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_4-300x283.jpg 300w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_4-150x141.jpg 150w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_4-1024x968.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_4.jpg 1768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archie&#39;s Scheme is Discovered<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ultimately, Archie&#8217;s wild scheme unravels, as each girls spies him with the other. \u00a0After being completely humiliated and berated by both girls, Archie is left alone at the theatre wondering how he ever got into this mess. \u00a0To add insult to injury, at the end of the story Archie is awarded two more tickets&#8230;both from a friendly policeman for Archie&#8217;s less than perfect parking job at the theatre!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1058\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1058\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1058\" title=\"Two Angry Dates\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_5-300x295.jpg\" alt=\"Two Angry Dates\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_5-300x295.jpg 300w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_5-150x147.jpg 150w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archie_5.jpg 909w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two Angry Dates<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This madcap adventure set the stage for many, many years of the developing love triangle between Archie, Betty and Veronica, and resulted in a number of similar stories where Archie had to choose &#8211;
