{"id":506,"date":"2009-02-08T18:19:06","date_gmt":"2009-02-08T23:19:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/?p=506"},"modified":"2009-06-28T20:59:03","modified_gmt":"2009-06-29T01:59:03","slug":"the-origin-of-the-batcave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/02\/08\/the-origin-of-the-batcave\/","title":{"rendered":"The Origin of the Bat Cave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back I posted about <a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/01\/29\/the-secrets-of-the-batcave\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dick Sprang&#8217;s &#8220;Secrets of the Batcave&#8221;<\/a> lithograph. \u00a0While I was looking at my print, I realized that I did not know the exact origin of the Batcave in comics. \u00a0Of course, there is a memorable cover devoted to the &#8220;1,000 Secrets of the Batcave&#8221; (<em>Batman<\/em> #48, August-September 1948), but I was curious about when the Batcave first appeared in comics, how it was introduced, etc.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_508\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman48.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-508\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-508\" title=\"Batman #48 (August-September 1948)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman48-213x299.jpg\" alt=\"Batman #48 (August-September 1948)\" width=\"213\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman48-213x299.jpg 213w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman48-106x149.jpg 106w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman48.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Batman #48 (August-September 1948)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0As I started looking into this, I realized that this was really an evolutionary process, as it appeared that Batman first had a secret lab in Wayne Manor and also used an old barn to garage the Batmobile and the Batplane. \u00a0While this got me on the right path, it didn&#8217;t tell me where the idea of an underground &#8220;cave&#8221; for Batman&#8217;s cool stuff first came into being in the Golden Age.<\/p>\n<p>After a little bit of research, it appears that the first mention of an underground nerve center for Batman and Robin to use as their headquarters was in the pages of the second story in\u00a0<em>Batman<\/em> #12 (August-September 1942), &#8220;The Wizard of Words&#8221; is almost exactly the same as the cover of <em>Batman<\/em> #48 that was\u00a0published\u00a0six years later (Note that in <em>Batman<\/em> #48 it is now clearly a &#8220;cavern&#8221; as opposed to a man-made structure, and the trophies are also present). \u00a0It&#8217;s also interesting that this underground bunker was not given a name at that time, whereas clearly we had a &#8220;Bat Plane&#8221; and a &#8220;Batmobile&#8221;. \u00a0Eighteen months later, writer Don Cameron \u00a0finally gave us the name &#8220;Bat Cave&#8221; in the pages of <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #83 (January 1944) in the story &#8220;Accidentally on Purpose!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_502\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/detective83.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-502\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-502\" title=\"Detective Comics #83 (January 1944)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/detective83-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Detective Comics #83 (January 1944)\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/detective83-214x300.jpg 214w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/detective83-107x150.jpg 107w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/detective83.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Detective Comics #83 (January 1944)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In this story, Bruce and Dick are in Wayne Manor when an alarm sounds warning them of an intruder. \u00a0As Bruce and Dick rush to the Cave to find Alfred in the Gym trying to work out, Dick exclaims, &#8220;The alarm from the <strong>Bat Cave<\/strong>! Someone must be down there!&#8221;. \u00a0Thus, the name &#8220;Bat Cave&#8221; was coined by Dick Grayson! \u00a0Of note, Alfred starts this story in his original overweight style, but by the end of the story he is the traditional and more well known &#8220;skinny&#8221; from Detective Comics #83<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As I read these early stories about the Bat Cave, I wondered about one of the most well known aspects of this place, the Trophy Room. \u00a0It did not appear in either story, and the Bat Cave is really only used as a hangar, \u00a0garage, workshop and laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, the Trophy Room actually appeared slightly before the first full drawing of the Bat Cave in <em>Batman<\/em> #12. \u00a0In the first story in that issue, &#8220;Brothers in Crime&#8221;, Don Cameron tells us about Batman&#8217;s &#8220;Hall of Trophies&#8221;. \u00a0Curiously, this room is not below Wayne Manor, but appears to be a room in the main house. \u00a0This room was later combined with the Bat Cave, but in 1942, it was already a &#8220;symbol of his thousand and one victories over crime!&#8221;
