{"id":523,"date":"2009-02-17T21:35:58","date_gmt":"2009-02-18T02:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/?p=523"},"modified":"2009-06-18T07:17:50","modified_gmt":"2009-06-18T12:17:50","slug":"love-is-in-the-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/02\/17\/love-is-in-the-air\/","title":{"rendered":"Love is in the Air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having just celebrated Valentine&#8217;s Day, I started thinking about the birth of the romance comics in the Golden Age of Comic Books.\u00a0 Honestly, I don&#8217;t consider myself an expert on this genre, and I&#8217;ve read very few Golden Age romance comics over the years, but there is no disputing that romance comics became very popular in the late 1940&#8217;s and were continuously published until at least the 1970&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>It is generally accepted that the first romance comic was created by the great team of Simon &amp; Kirby (of Captain America fame) for Crestwood Publications.\u00a0 Their book, <em>Young Romance<\/em>, debuted with\u00a0issue number one in September-October, 1947.\u00a0 After Crestwood folded, DC Comics purchased its assets, and published <em>Young Romance <\/em>continuously until issue 208 in 1975 (DC&#8217;s first issue was #125 in 1963).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_525\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/youngromance1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-525\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-525\" title=\"Young Romance #1 (Sept.-Oct. 1947)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/youngromance1-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"Young Romance #1 (Sept.-Oct. 1947)\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/youngromance1-219x300.jpg 219w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/youngromance1-109x150.jpg 109w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/youngromance1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young Romance #1 (Sept.-Oct. 1947)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In fact, DC Comics in recognizing the historical significance of <em>Young Romance<\/em> as the genesis of the romance genre, reprinted <em>Young Romance<\/em>#1 as a part of their &#8220;Millennium&#8221; series in 2000.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_526\" style=\"width: 207px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/milleniumyoungromance1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-526\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-526\" title=\"DC Comics Millenium Edition Young Romances #1 (2000)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/milleniumyoungromance1-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"DC Comics Millenium Edition Young Romances #1 (2000)\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/milleniumyoungromance1-197x300.jpg 197w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/milleniumyoungromance1-98x150.jpg 98w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/milleniumyoungromance1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DC Comics Millenium Edition Young Romances #1 (2000)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Needless to say, after <em>Young Romance <\/em>proved that romance comics was a viable genre, many other publishers followed suit, and there was an explosion of romance comics in the Golden Age.\u00a0 One company above all others paved much of the road for the success of these titles, St. John.\u00a0 Archer St. John published numerous romance titles during the late 1940&#8217;s and early 1950&#8217;s, led by the fabulous art\u00a0of the great <a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/17\/comics-then-5-comics-first-great-african-american-artist\/\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Baker<\/a> (one of the first African American comic book artists.\u00a0 I talk a little more about him in <a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2008\/11\/12\/golden-age-of-comic-books-november-12-2008-59\/\" target=\"_blank\">Episode #59 of the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast<\/a>).\u00a0 St. John&#8217;s titles such as <em>Teen Age Romances<\/em>, <em>Teen Age Confessions<\/em>, <em>Hollywood Romances<\/em> and many others proved immensely popular.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the very first graphic novel, <em>It Rhymes with Lust<\/em>, was published by St. John with art by Baker.\u00a0 It was touted as a &#8220;picture novel&#8221; and was a full length romance novel in comic book format.\u00a0 This digest sized 128 page comic was published by St. John in 1950.\u00a0 This book is hard to find on the collector market, but Dark Horse came to the rescue of romance comic and Matt Baker fans in March 2007 when it published a replica edition of this book with a cover price of $14.95.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_530\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/itrhymeswithlust.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-530\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-530\" title=\"It Rhymes with Lust (1950)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/itrhymeswithlust-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"It Rhymes with Lust (1950)\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/itrhymeswithlust-217x300.jpg 217w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/itrhymeswithlust-108x150.jpg 108w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/itrhymeswithlust.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It Rhymes with Lust (1950)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Volumes could be written about romance comics and their origins, and in fact they have.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2007, Fantagraphics published <em>Confessions, Romances, Secrets, and Temptations &#8211; Archer St. John and the St. John Romance Comics<\/em> by John Benson.\u00a0 This 112 page paperback is full of well researched information about the St. John romance comics.\u00a0 This book is well worth the $9.95 cover price, and is full of rare photos and interviews.\u00a0 I particularly enjoyed the interview with Fred Robinson, the half-brother of Matt Baker.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_528\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/bensonbook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-528\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-528\" title=\"Confessions, Romances, Secrets &amp; Temptations by John Benson (2007)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you REALLY want to learn the nitty-gritty about romance comics, Michelle Nolan&#8217;s <em>Love on the Racks<\/em> is a &#8220;must buy&#8221;.\u00a0 This 229 page hardback edition was published in\u00a0April 2008 by McFarland &amp;
