{"id":744,"date":"2009-05-16T15:54:28","date_gmt":"2009-05-16T20:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/?p=744"},"modified":"2009-05-16T16:58:12","modified_gmt":"2009-05-16T21:58:12","slug":"my-golden-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/05\/16\/my-golden-age\/","title":{"rendered":"My Golden Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although I am a fan, collector and historian of the Golden Age of Comic Books, my personal Golden Age was much later.\u00a0 As a child of the 1960&#8217;s and 70&#8217;s, I read a lot of the comics that Pat Curley features on the <a href=\"http:\/\/sacomics.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Age of Comic Books Blog<\/a>.\u00a0 Not only did I read Silver Age comics, I spent a lot of time in front of the TV on Saturday mornings watching the cartoons of the same era.\u00a0 In a way, these cartoons influenced me just as much as the comics that I read.<\/p>\n<p>I was therfore thrilled when Warner Brothers asked me to review a series of DVD sets that will be available in stores in the coming weeks.\u00a0 These sets took me down memory lane and were just plain fun to\u00a0watch.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_742\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091151dvdflt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-742\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-742\" title=\"Saturday Morning Cartoons - 1960's - Volume 1\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091151dvdflt-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"Saturday Morning Cartoons - 1960's - Volume 1\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091151dvdflt-256x300.jpg 256w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091151dvdflt-128x150.jpg 128w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091151dvdflt-874x1024.jpg 874w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saturday Morning Cartoons - 1960&#39;s - Volume 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I first watched WB&#8217;s <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Saturday Morning Cartoons, 1960&#8217;s<\/em>, volume 1<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 This two disk set will be <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">in stores on May 26, 2009<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and features over 5 hours of classic 1960&#8217;s Hanna-Barbera cartoons.\u00a0 Of the thirty-three &#8216;toons on these disks, you will laugh to the antics of Porky Pig, Secret Squirrel (my personal favorite!), The Flintstones, Top Cat, Peter Potamus, Magilla Gorilla, Quick Draw McGraw (with a great El Kabong episode), Atom Ant, Space Ghost and many others.\u00a0 You will find bonus features of &#8220;The Herculoids: First Family of Planet Quasar&#8221; with the subperb art of Alex Toth, and &#8220;Monster Rock: The Adventures of Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles&#8221;.\u00a0 This is a great set of classic 1960&#8217;s cartoons, and a must have for collectors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_741\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091148dvdflt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-741\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-741\" title=\"Saturday Morning Cartoons - 1970's Volume 1\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091148dvdflt-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"Saturday Morning Cartoons - 1970's Volume 1\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091148dvdflt-256x300.jpg 256w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091148dvdflt-128x150.jpg 128w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000091148dvdflt-874x1024.jpg 874w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saturday Morning Cartoons - 1970&#39;s Volume 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next up was WB&#8217;s <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Saturday Morning Cartoons, 1970&#8217;s<\/em>, volume 1<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 This is another great set that will also be <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">in stores on May 26, 2009<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 How can you resist the adventures of Batman and Scooby-Doo?\u00a0 What about Josie and the Pussy Cats, Yogi and Boo-Boo, Speed Buggy, and many others?\u00a0 With 17 cartoons and over five hours of fun, you can&#8217;t go wrong with this\u00a0 2-disk set.\u00a0 As a bonus, you&#8217;ll find, &#8220;Solving Crimes the Chan Clan Way&#8221; with Charlie Chan, \u00a0and Scooby-Doo&#8217;s &#8220;Heavens to Betsy Ross: The Spirit of Funky Phantom&#8221;.\u00a0 This is classic 1970&#8217;s cartoon fun!\u00a0 I can remember watching many of these shows when they first aired.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_743\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000097591dvdflt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-743\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-743\" title=\"The Jetsons - Season 2 - Volume 1\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000097591dvdflt-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Jetsons - Season 2 - Volume 1\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000097591dvdflt-259x300.jpg 259w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000097591dvdflt-129x150.jpg 129w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000097591dvdflt-886x1024.jpg 886w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Jetsons - Season 2 - Volume 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As if the 1960&#8217;s and 1970&#8217;s series weren&#8217;t enough, on <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">June 2, 2009<\/span><\/strong>, WB will release another great collection, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Jetsons<\/em>, season 2, volume 1<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 If you are a fan of George Jetson and his family (don&#8217;t forget Astro, the dog of the future!), you&#8217;ll love this 3 disk set that presents 21 episodes of this classic cartoon series from the 1960&#8217;s.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t go wrong with the zany misadventures of George, Jane, Judy, Elroy and Rosie (their\u00a0robotic maid).\u00a0 As a bonus, you will be treated to &#8220;The Jetsons Return to the Future&#8221; that explores the evolution of the series.\u00a0 It&#8217;s cool when you think about the Jetsons being the first TV family to have a big-screen home entertainment center and other futuristic themes such as floating cities, flying cars and androids, long before these regualry apppeared in many Sc-Fi blockbluster films.\u00a0 This is great entertainment!\u00a0 Do you have <em>The Jestons<\/em> theme song in your head yet? &#8220;<em>Meet George Jetson&#8230;Jane, his wife&#8230;daughter Judy&#8230;his boy Elroy.<\/em>..&#8221;\u00a0 I bet it will take you a while to get that song out of your head!<\/p>\n<p>All three DVD sets are in standard format to preserve the aspect ratio of the original televsion exhibition of these shows.\u00a0 I found the menus on these disks easy to use, and welcomed the table of contents on the inside of\u00a0<em>The<\/em> <em>Jetsons<\/em> case.\u00a0 I was a little disappointed that the 1960&#8217;s and 1970&#8217;s sets did not have similar tables of contents, but I did like the slipcase packaging on all three sets.\u00a0 The 1960&#8217;s and 1970&#8217;s packaging compliments each other, so they will look good side by side on your shelf.\u00a0 One word of caution to you parents out there;
