{"id":754,"date":"2009-05-24T14:12:40","date_gmt":"2009-05-24T19:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/?p=754"},"modified":"2009-05-24T18:40:22","modified_gmt":"2009-05-24T23:40:22","slug":"the-great-comic-book-heroes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/05\/24\/the-great-comic-book-heroes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Comic Book Heroes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, I posted about my <a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/05\/03\/my-favorite-golden-age-reprint-book\/\" target=\"_blank\">favorite Golden Age comic book reprint book<\/a>. \u00a0In thinking about that post, I tried to remember the <em>first<\/em>\u00a0comic book reprint book that showcased a significant number of diverse Golden Age stories. \u00a0While DC did a pretty good job with Golden Age reprints in the 1960&#8217;s with their annuals and 80 Page Giants, the first book I am aware of that featured Golden Age reprints of the stories of different publishers in one volume was <em>The Great Comic Book Heroes<\/em> by Jules Feiffer. \u00a0This large format hard back was published in 1965 and featured many origin stories and &#8220;firsts&#8221; from some of the most popular Golden Age heroes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_751\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhfc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-751\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-751\" title=\"The Great Comic Book Heroes (1965)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhfc-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Great Comic Book Heroes (1965)\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhfc-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhfc-111x150.jpg 111w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhfc-759x1024.jpg 759w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhfc.jpg 1602w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Comic Book Heroes (1965)<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_753\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbh2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-753\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-753\" title=\"The Great Comic Book Heroes (1965)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbh2-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Great Comic Book Heroes (1965)\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbh2-216x300.jpg 216w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbh2-108x150.jpg 108w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbh2-740x1024.jpg 740w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbh2.jpg 1035w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Comic Book Heroes (1965)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Feiffer was not just some comic book fan publishing a book of reprints.\u00a0 As can be seen in his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jules_Feiffer\" target=\"_blank\">biography<\/a>, he was a serious journalist and author who\u00a0went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 for his political cartoons that appeared in the <em>Village Voice<\/em>. \u00a0He was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2004. \u00a0It&#8217;s clear from his now famous introduction to <em>The Great Comic Book Heroes<\/em>, that he had a fascination with the Golden Age of Comic Books and the superheroes that it spawned. \u00a0This book was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Great-Comic-Book-Heroes\/dp\/1560975016\" target=\"_blank\">reprinted<\/a> by Fantagraphics in a 2003 trade paperback, but without some of the great stories reprinted in the original. \u00a0The introduction itself is worth the price of admission for its interesting and revealing look at Feiffer&#8217;s views of the &#8220;great superheroes&#8221;, \u00a0told in the historical context of the era&#8217;s creators and their creations. \u00a0The introduction is divided into 8 chapters totaling 42 pages. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0thoroughly enjoyable and provides a sometimes serious take on superheroes at a time when they were mostly written off as cheap entertainment, especially in the world of academia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_752\" style=\"width: 238px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhtoc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-752\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-752\" title=\"The Great Comic Book Heroes - Table of Contents\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhtoc-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Great Comic Book Heroes - Table of Contents\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhtoc-228x300.jpg 228w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhtoc-114x150.jpg 114w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhtoc-779x1024.jpg 779w, http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gcbhtoc.jpg 1640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Comic Book Heroes - Table of Contents<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the Introduction, the book contains full color reprints of some of the greatest Golden Age stories of all time. \u00a0In this volume you&#8217;ll find:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Superman<\/em> #1 (Origin of Superman)<\/li>\n<li><em>Superman<\/em> #3 (The &#8220;broken dam&#8221; story)<\/li>\n<li><em>Whiz Comics<\/em> #1 (Single page from the origin of Captain Marvel)<\/li>\n<li><em>Batman<\/em> #1 (Origin recap and first Joker story)<\/li>\n<li><em>Marvel Mystery Comics<\/em> #19 (Human Torch and Toro battle &#8220;The Hag&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><em>Flash Comics<\/em> #1 (Origin of the Golden Age Flash)<\/li>\n<li><em>All-American Comics<\/em> #16 (Origin of the Golden Age Green Lantern)<\/li>\n<li><em>All-Star Comics<\/em> #1 (The Spectre)<\/li>\n<li><em>Flash Comics<\/em> #5 (The Hawkman)<\/li>\n<li><em>Wonder Woman<\/em> #2 (Wonder Woman fights Mars, God of War)<\/li>\n<li><em>Marvel Mystery Comics<\/em> #7 (Sub-Mariner)<\/li>\n<li><em>Captain America<\/em> #1 (Origin of Captain America and Bucky)<\/li>\n<li><em>Police Comics<\/em> #1 (Origin of Plastic Man)<\/li>\n<li><em>The Spirit<\/em> (July 20, 1941 &#8211; The Spirit in the Middle East)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While all of the stories in this book have now been reprinted (some many times) it&#8217;s doubtful that in 1965 most of these stories had seen publication since the Golden Age, making this book a treasure trove for the true fan of the Golden Age of Comic Books.\u00a0 Indeed, it likely <em>created<\/em> many fans of the Golden Age of Comic Books who, after reading this book, went in search of other Golden Age stories.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite parts of this book is the quote selected by Feiffer to include just prior to his Introduction:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have known many adults who have treasured throughout their lives some of the books they read as children. \u00a0I have never come across any \u00a0adult or adolescent who had outgrown comic-book reading who would ever dream of keeping any of these &#8220;books&#8221;
