The Batmobile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my <a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/2009\/03\/08\/the-year-of-the-bat-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous post detailing the first year of Batman&#8217;s life in the comics<\/a>, I mentioned a lot of\u00a0aspects of the character that not only defined him, but made him an extremely popular superhero in the early Golden Age of comic books.\u00a0 As time went by in Batman&#8217;s life, it became clear that his great gadgets defined him as much as his skills as a crimefighter, and none more than his cool car, the <strong>Batmobile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When thinking of the Batmobile, most fans of Batman think of the cars from the movies or the very distinctive\u00a0Batmobile from the 1960&#8217;s TV series (I had a toy Batmobile from this era that towed a Batboat on a trailer &#8211; one of my favorite childhood toys!)\u00a0 But what was the origin of this famous set of Bat-wheels?<\/p>\n<p>Batman first used a &#8220;specially built high-powered auto&#8221; way back in the pages of <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #30 (August 1939).\u00a0 This was not the Batmobile that fans of the Golden Age came to know and love, and was just a souped-up red sedan.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t learn much about this car other than it was fast!\u00a0 It did not bear any distinctive design or embelm to let the public know it was Batman&#8217;s ride.\u00a0 That was probably a good thing, as on occasion Batman would use this car to trail crooks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_634\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-634\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-634\" title=\"Batman's first car from Detective Comics #30 (1939)\" src=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec30-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Batman's first car from Detective Comics #30 (1939)\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec30-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec30-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec30.jpg 738w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-634\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Batman&#39;s first car from Detective Comics #30 (1939)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #33 (November 1939) we learned Batman&#8217;s origin for the first time, but Batman was still driving the &#8220;high powered&#8221; red sedan.\u00a0 In <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #37, Batman has a new look for his car, a black convertible.\u00a0 This car has no bat-emblem or insignia, and we are told that Batman is out for a drive in this car on a lonely road and has to stop for directions because he is lost (He was still working on those detective skills!)\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_635\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec331.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-635\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-635\" title=\"Batman's &quot;high powered&quot; in this story, but once again\u00a0it does not bear any insignia or emblem to identify it as the vehicle of the caped crusaders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_638\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec40.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-638\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-638\" title=\"Batman &amp; Robin in the Black Convertible (Detective Comics #40)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, in <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #48 (February 1941), Batman and Robin travel down a flight of stairs into a secret tunnel under the Wayne home into a &#8220;seemingly deserted old barn&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 Here, we find our heroes climbing into a vehicle, and &#8220;There is the quiet purr of a supercharged motor &#8211; and the <strong>Batmobile<\/strong> streaks out in to the night!&#8221;\u00a0 For the first time, we learn the name of Batman&#8217;s crime fighting vehicle, the Batmobile!\u00a0 Strangely, this car is a hybrid of the two previous Batmobiles.\u00a0 Like the original sedan, it is red in color, but it is also a convertible like the black car from a few issues earlier.\u00a0 This new car is also unique in that it sports a small gold bat-shaped hood ornament to identify this as Batman&#8217;s car.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_640\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenagecomics.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/tec48.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-640\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-640\" title=\"First time car called &quot;Batmobile&quot;
