Comics Podcast Crossover #9

I was pleased to be included in the “Superhero Relationships” episode of Comics Podcast Crossover #9. A number of great comics podcasts are represented in this episode, and each focuses on the “intimate” relationships of various superheroes. My ten minute segment begins about half-way through the episode (listen for the familiar GAC Podcast intro music) and focused on the Golden Age Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. I discuss how the Golden Age Wonder Woman would never have become one of DC’s “big three” if not for her falling in love with Captain Trevor after he crashed on Paradise Island. Indeed, this is probably one of the earliest “superhero relationships” and the only superhero I am aware of whose origins are the result of the relationship. The other segments are as diverse as comics are today, but provide some interesting (and sometimes explicit) discussions about the intimate (and sometimes not so intimate) sides of superheroes. The run time on CPC #9 is approximately two hours and seventeen minutes, so it may take a couple of sittings to hear the entire show. I hope you enjoy it!

Golden Age of Comic Books – August 15, 2006 – #42

In this episode of the Golden Age of Comic Books we talk all about the super hero that got the Golden Age underway, SUPERMANJerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman, and his fist adventures were ultimately published in Action Comics #1 (June, 1938).

After his first appearance, the character’s popularity skyrocketed, and ultimately he was given his own title, Superman, which debuted with issue #1 in the summer of 1939.  Although a limited origin was told in the early stories, the origin was expanded in the pages of Superman #53 and Superman #61.  Both stories are discussed in detail in this episode.

Superman has become a household name and cultural icon and remains “super” popular in comics, television, movies and other media.

Golden Age of Comic Books – May 21, 2006 – #41

In this episode of the Golden Age of Comic Books we discuss all things related to Airboy and The Heap.  Both characters were published by Hillman periodicals and appeared in Air Fighters Comics.   Airboy first appeared in Air Fighters volume 1, #2 in 1942.  The title was renamed Airboy Comics in 1945 with volume 2, #11.   He last appeared in volume 10, #4 (May, 1953).

The Heap was a monster-like character that first appeared in Air Fighters Comics #3, but became very popular in his own right, at times taking over the cover of Airboy Comics from Airboy.  He ran until the 1950’s when Hillman went out of business.

Golden Age of Comic Books – April 26, 2006 – #40

In this episode, we discuss Firehair from Fiction House.  She first appeared in Rangers Comics #21 (February, 1945) and appeared in every issue until #65 (May, 1952).   Firehair, a red-headed (thus the name) english woman who became an indian maiden (and warrior), also had her own title, Firehair, which for a few issues was titled Pioneer West Romances featuring Firehair.  Her title was published quarterly between the winter of 1948 until the spring of 1952.
