Golden Age of Comic Books – April 20, 2006 – #39

In this episode, we discuss the Fighting Yank from Nedor Comics.  The Fighting Yank first got his start in the pages of Startling Comics #10 (September, 1941).  The Fighting Yank appeared in his own title and in Nedor’s America’s Best Comics.  His last appearance in the Golden Age of Comics books was in 1949.

Golden Age of Comics Books – April 4, 2006 – #38

In this episode we discuss one of the great MLJ superheroes, The Shield!  The Shield got his start in the pages of Pep Comics #1 (January, 1940), and was one of MLJ’s most enduring characters until they shifted focus to their most popular character, Archie Andrews.  The Shield also appeared in the pages of Shield-Wizard Comics.  He appeared in the Golden Age until Archie completely took over Pep Comics in 1947.  He last appeared in Pep Comics #65.

Golden Age of Comic Books – March 22, 2006 – #37

In this episode we discuss all things related to Sheena, Queen of the Jungle!  Sheena made her first appearance in Jumbo Comics #1 (September, 1938) and appeared in every issue of this title until it ended with issue #167 in March, 1953.  Her first full cover appearance on Jumbo Comics was with issue #13, and she appeared on the covers of almost every issue thereafter.  She also had her own title that ran for ten years with 18 issues.  Sheena #1 number was the Spring, 1942 issue.  Sheena was the first female Golden Age character to get her own title.

Golden Age of Comic Books – March 9, 2006 – #36

We feature a discussion of Fawcett’s popular character, Bulletman!  Bulletman got his start in Nickel Comics #1 (May, 1940) and appeared in all eight issues of this title.  Bulletman and his partner, Bulletgirl, also appeared in Bulletman Comics that debuted with issue #1 in 1941 and ran for 16 issues until the fall of 1946.  Bulletman was one of Fawcett’s most popular characters behind Captain Marvel.

Golden Age of Comic Books – February 23, 2006 – #35

In this issue of the Golden Age of Comic Books we discuss Dr. Fate from DC Comics!  Dr. Fate got his star in the pages of More Fun Comics #55 (May, 1940) and continued to appear in this title until issue #98 in 1944.  He also made regular appearances with the Justice Society of America in the pages of All Star Comics.  He was a mystical super hero, and many of his stories dealt with the supernatural.
