Cool Stuff, Revisited – Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Season One, Part Two

Back in August of 2010, I mentioned the release of Batman: The Brave and the Bold Season One, Part One on DVD.  I was pleased to see Warner announce the release of part two of this series. Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Season One, Part Two.

Happy New Year 2011 from the Golden Age of Comic Books!

Another year is upon us! Here is a classic New Year cover from DC’s New Adventure Comics #12 (January 1937).  This title started out as New Comics (issues 1-11) and later became DC’s popular Adventure Comics (issues 32-503) featuring many greats including The Sandman, Hourman, Starman, Aquaman and Superboy.  The issue featured here is DC’s first use of “Adventure” in the title.  It’s interesting that over time less emphasis is placed on the word “New” in the title (it was eliminated altogether with the 32nd issue), as DC changed the focus of the magazine to an all adventure format.

A Golden Age Archie Christmas

I’ve always been a fan of Golden Age Archie comics.  It should also be pretty clear to anyone who has read the blog that I love Christmas, especially as it is depicted in the Golden Age of Comic Books!  While I’ve covered a lot of aspects of Christmas in the Golden Age, I’ve never mentioned some of my favorite Archie Christmas covers from the late Golden Age of Comics (and a little into the Silver Age).  Starting in 1954, Archie began publishing Archie Giant Series Magazine.  The first six issues of this publication were titled, Archie’s Christmas Stocking.  These issues contained some classic Christmas stories.  I’ve read a few over the years, but would recommend them for any fan of Archie and the Golden Age of Comic Books.

The fist six issues of this series (1954-1959) are titled Archie’s Christmas Stocking.  Later issues featured other themes and characters, with the Christmas Stocking appearing each year for the Holidays.  Here are the covers of the remainder of the first six issues.  By the way, according to the Grand Comic Book Database, Archie Giant Series Magazine was contiuously published until 1992 (332 issues, numbered 1 through 632 – There are 300 missing numbers, 36-135, 252-451).  There was also another Archie’s Christmas Stocking series published by Archie Publications starting in 1993.

The Fate of a Podcast

Notably absent from my Christmas activities this year was the annual Golden Age of Comic Books Christmas Podcast.  I wish I had been able to record the Christmas show this year, but life just got in the way!  As those of you who have followed the show realize, I’ve recorded fewer and fewer shows over the years, to the point where I have not been behind the microphone since last Christmas (2009).  As good as my intentions have been, I’ve just not been able to find the time, and have come to the conclusion that it’s time to acknowledge that things are not likely to change for the foreseeable future.  So, instead of making promises that I can’t keep, I’ve decided to make a formal announcement that the Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast is “off the air”.  This is not to say that I won’t ever record the show again, but for now I’m going to pull the plug.  The good news is that I am not going to end the blog, and plan to keep it updated with posts about the Golden Age of Comic Books.  I also hope to appear with my fellow podcasters on their great shows if they ever want to sit around and talk about the Golden Age.

To my fans and friends, thanks for riding along with me since June of 2005.  It’s been a whole lot of fun, and I appreciate your support and friendship.  I hope everyone has a great New Year in 2011!

Golden Age Santa Claus Funnies – Ho, Ho, Ho!!!

One of the Golden Age of Comic Books perenniel Christmas favorites was the great Santa Claus Funnies published by Dell between 1942 and 1961.  I covered this title in The Golden Age of Comic Books Podcast Episode 55 in 2007, but thought it would be fun to showcase those covers as we approach Christmas, 2010.  Actually, Dell wasn’t the first publisher to produce Santa Claus Funnies.  A couple of years earlier in 1940, Whitman published a one shot comic with the same title.

Thereafter, Dell began the title with issue #1 in 1942.

The first issue was the only WWII Santa title, featuring Santa driving a trusty Jeep to deliver his toys to the good girls and boys!

Issue #2 (1943) featured a more traditional Christmas cover, and was the last issue to have a unique number for this title.

Starting with the third issue, and with one exception, Dell integrated the title into its Four Color Comics series where it remained until the last issue in 1961.  For some unknown reason, in 1952 Dell published the title with “#1” on the cover, and did not include it in the Four Color Series.  Santa Claus Funnies would again be a part of Four Color with the 1953 issue.  I have not been able to find an explanation for the 1952 anomaly.

Following are the covers of all of the Santa Claus Funnies issues published by Dell between 1944 and 1961.  I hope you enjoy these Santa covers!

Sadly, Dell ceased publication of this title with the 1961 issue.  Needless to say, Santa had a great twenty year run during the Golden Age and early Silver Age of Comics.  I am not aware of any reprints of these issues, but most, other than the early issues, can be found for a reasonable price.

By the way, if you are looking for more Golden Age Christmas covers, take a look at the entire Four Color Comics run.  You can view them over at the GCD site, where the covers located in this post were found.  Thanks to the GCD for a great resource.

Merry Christmas!
