Golden Age of Comic Books – October 17, 2005 – #20

In this episode we talk about the one and only Captain Marvel!  The “Big Red Cheese” made his first appearance in Whiz Comics #2 (#1) in February, 1940.  He had first appeared in ashcan copies of Flash Comics and Thrill Comics as Captain Thunder.  Due to copyright issues, Fawcett changed the character’s name to Captain Marvel.  In addition to Whiz Comics, he also appeared in Captain Marvel Comics, The Marvel Family and other titles published by Fawcett.  After a long legal battle with DC Comics over alleged copyright infringement by Fawcett (DC alleged Captain Marvel was simply of knock off of Superman), Fawcett ceased their comic book operations and later sold all of its characters to DC.  DC began publishing Captain Marvel in the 1970’s.  Today, Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful superheroes in the DC Universe.
