Golden Age of Comics Podcast Halloween Repeats

Happy Halloween from the Golden Age of Comic Books! I have not had time recently to record a new show, but in the fine tradition of reruns (“reprints” for you comics fans), I thought I would post the links for two of my previous episodes with “scary” Halloween themes.

Going way back to Episode 7 of the Golden Age of Comic Books (July 16, 2005), I devoted the show to the EC Horror Comics from the 1950’s. If you want to read the best horror comics from the Golden Age, EC is the only place to go. EC published Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror and The Haunt of Fear. EC had the best writers and artisits of the day working in their bullpen, and if you can stand the gore, you’ll love these vintage horror comics. Fortunately, these comics have been reprinted many times, and are currently being reprinted in some very nice, full color hardback books.

In 2006, I recorded one of my favorite episodes of the Golden Age of Comic Books (episode 46, October 29, 2006) featuring none other than the classic Frankenstein monster, with writing and art by the great Dick Briefer. Breifer’s incarnation of Mary Shelly’s 1818 literary work (Shelly wrote the original novel at age 18) first appeared in Prize Comics #7 in 1940. The monster started out as a very scary and destructive character, later becoming part of a humor themed strip. He got his own title in 1945, and in the early 1950’s became the rampaging monster of destruction all over again. His title ran until 1954.
