A short post here to mention a really great book by David Hajdu, The Ten Cent Plague. Published in 2008, Hajdu’s book explores the effect of the “comics scare” related to crime and horror comics that occured just after World War II until the early 1950’s. This book is very well researched and is a great read. I would recommend this book to any fan of the Golden Age of Comic Books who wants to learn more about the Senate Committee Hearings, Wertham and his Seduction of the Innocent, Bill Gaines’ infamous testimony and the birth of the Comics Code Authority.
You can read more about this book by going to Hajdu’s web site. He was also interviewed on the Colbert Report about his book.
The book was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux and is available for $26.00 (hardback) and $16.00 (paperback). It’s available on Amazon in paperback for about $11.00.
